What is the Forest Stewardship Program?

The Forest Stewardship Program is a federally-mandated program designed to encourage the long-term stewardship of private forestland, to assist landowners in improving their management of the land, and to establish a positive land ethic among forestland owners.

Why is this program important?

Population increases are placing tremendous pressure on California forest and woodland resources. Many previously productive forestlands have been subdivided and developed and this trend is continuing. Management and stewardship of these converted and neighboring parcels have a large effect on the California environment. Three major environmental concerns have emerged as key issues to be addressed by this program: pre-fire fuels management, forest and woodland health, and water quality.

How does the program work?

The Stewardship Program works primarily through partnerships with organizations and agencies at the local level, providing tools such as educational and informational material, financial resources to educate groups, incentives for landowners, promotion of demonstration projects, a forest helpline and other assistance to landowners and community groups.

Who is involved?

An advisory Stewardship Committee, composed of representatives of interested agencies, organizations, and others, oversees the California Stewardship Program. The Program depends on the combined efforts of the Program partners: the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF), USDA Forest Service (USFS), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Farm Services Agency (FSA), University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE), and the collective energy of many other individuals and organizations. On-the-ground achievements are accomplished through partnerships with organizations and agencies at the local level, especially Resource Conservation Districts (RCD) and Resource Conservation and Development Councils (RC&D).

How can I learn more?

The Stewardship Helpline (1-800-738-TREE) can provide answers to specific questions or referral to experts who can help. A quarterly newsletter, Forestland Steward, contains current information on topics of interest to landowners and others. This website will continue to grow, providing more information and linking users with other related sites.
