Environment gains by good economy

To the editor:

Can you imagine any president coming to the West Coast, visiting with some rich friends in Brentwood and never even going to talk with the working stiffs in downtown L.A.? Not hardly.

Even some of my Democrat friends are finally agreeing with me ... this is Al and Tipper's first campaign trip. Over the next three years, even we will be sick of seeing pictures of Al hugging a tree and Tipper posed on a rock somewhere on the North Shore. Thank you, Harry Reid.

What can the money-starved federal government possibly do for this area that we could not do if we had a proper economy to do it with. Except give us a bad reputation. "We don't want to go to Lake Tahoe on our vacation ... the lake is not clear any more and the trees are all dead." (Iowa resident to his wife as they discuss their vacation plans.)

Please remember, and dear reader, you too, that every time you do an article on this trip, you are providing free campaign material for Al and Tipper. And please be careful what you say in the articles ... the major wire services will be reading you for local "feed" and you could be quoted nationwide ... and do us all way more harm than good.

Does Bill Clinton care that our occupancy used to be 80 percent to 90 percent in July and we are at 24 percent this year (thank God for our "weeklies)? Not really. In order to have a healthy environment we have to have a healthy economy to pay for it. I guarantee that you will not want to live with the strings that come with "federal money," no matter what it is called. Be very careful what you ask for ... you might get it!
