When President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore depart Lake Tahoe they will take more than just memories of the beautiful area with them.
They each will be the recipient of a 35- by 50-inch framed color photograph of a sunrise over Emerald Bay titled "Indigo Dawn, Lake Tahoe." The photo was shot in early June at approximately 5:30 a.m. during a three-minute period when conditions were "just right."
Photographer and businessman John T. Ravize', who took the photo, made the presentation to Gore on Friday at the U.S. Forest Service Lake of the Sky Amphitheater. Ravize' said he hoped to make the presentation to Clinton at the Hyatt in Incline Village on Saturday.
The photographs are No. 1 and No. 2 of a limited edition of 144 and are valued at $2,500 each. The Cibachrome prints were shot with a Pentax 6x7 camera on Fuji film. The images are a gift from Ravize' and the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. They are signed by the photographer and bear a plaque inscribed "In appreciation of your support for the natural resources of Lake Tahoe."
Ravize' was shooting near the Whittell Estate about three weeks ago when he was observed by Bob Armstrong, assistant secretary of the interior. Armstrong, who is an amateur photographer, began talking with Ravize' and looked at the photographs he had with him.
"He was amazed at the quality of my work and asked if I could present them to the president and vice president during their visit to Lake Tahoe," Ravize' explained. The final photograph selection was made by Juan Palma, forest supervisor for the Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
Ravize' attended the University of California at Berkeley and has worked with landscape photographer Robert Glenn Ketchum for the past nine years. He also is the owner and operator, along with his wife, Linde', of A Frame of Mind, photographic book publishers, Frame of Mind Gallery at Caesars Tahoe and Institute of Mountain Photography.
