Watershed Fair
Project Description
Description: The Watershed Fair is a special event scheduled for Spring, 1997 which allows students throughout the district an opportunity to share what they have learned about the watershed with the larger community. The "fair" in this case is an interactive day between the students and the community; it is envisioned to encourage improved community-classroom connections, provide an opportunity for students to reflect on what they've learned, and to be fun!
Instructional Goals of the Project:
- Organize and implement outdoor projects which relate to the watershed and local community.
- Use skills developed in an integrated curriculum project to create an activity or display to present their knowledge to their parents and other community leaders. For example:
- Science: work with a resource agency to study tree health in a plot near the school. Visit the trees every year and graph the changes in tree health.
- Math: map the area, create a database to include the findings, and graph changes over time.
- History: learn about the history of the tree plot area by researching past owners and interviewing them about how they used the land.
- Language Arts: write a poem or story or play about the trees in the plot area.
- Art: create a collage of the living things in the forest and how they relate to one another or build a set for the play.
- Social Studies: investigate the people who live around the area and who use the area. What do they do for a living? What do they like to do in their leisure time? How do they feel about living in the watershed and what do they do to help or hurt it?
- Watershed Fair entry: using all the information gained throughout the school year, put on a play for parents which shows them what they have learned.
- Create the opportunity for children of different age groups to work together on a project and fair entry.
- Create the opportunity for students to improve self-esteem and teamwork skills to plan, design, and implement a fair entry.
Evaluation Technique: Children present their work to parents, community members, and agencies involved.
