Description: Work with the California Tahoe Conservancy (CTC) to address neighborhood use and overall effectiveness issues for three drainage basins in the Kings Beach area. The students will design and produce bilingual informative signs to stop neighborhood children from using the basins as bicycle tracks. They will also monitor vegetation establishment in the basins and examine how basins work to improve water quality. This study will add to knowledge about culturally appropriate environmental education and can promote appropriate outdoor uses of the environment.

Instructional Goals of the Project:

• Design and post informative and attractive signs at three drainage basins in Kings Beach.
• Explore how signs can be effective in our cultures.
• Design signs and how to "present" to community.
• Monitor the growth and change at the basins throughout the school year.
• Conduct follow-up studies at the basins and in class to learn how drainage basins work.
• Familiarize with issues and techniques used in other areas- e.g. children's museums.
