Drainage Basin Investigation in Kings Beach: Use and Effectiveness
Project Update

Project Update: The project is underway with the following steps completed as of October, 1996:

  1. Project Definition. Anne Thomas discussed project perameters with Robert Erlich from the CTC. The overall project goals include a sign development componant which will address ongoing disturbance caused by neighborhood children riding their bikes in the basins, and a monitoring element to study and evaluate the effectiveness of the basins in meeting water quality improvement goals. (Complete project goals are listed here.)

  2. Student Introduction. Robert met with the 4th grade class and discussed with them the purpose of the basins and how vegetation disturbance impacts their usefulness. He also encouraged the class to think about how to discourage use. This information will be used as the students identify an approach to discourage such use.

  3. Interpretive/Informational Sign Creation. Students designed some initial signs and submitted to the CTC for approval.

  4. Presentation. Students led their 2nd grade partners on a tour of the drainage basins and explained what they were and answered the younger children's questions.
