Trout Creek Assessment and Restoration Project
Project Update

Project Update: The project envisioned by the teachers at the middle and high school in Truckee has been delayed due to access restrictions to the project site. Trout Creek offers excellent sites for long-term evaluation within easy distance of the schools, yet this stream reach passes through private property and permission to access could not be obtained. (The property has recently changed hands and the new owners could not be reached.)

Six teachers met at two after school field training workshops to learn stream measuring/monitoring techniques and discuss project progress. They were assisted by Alice Berg and Mary Westmoreland, USFS Tahoe Forest; Eric Oppenheimer, Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board; Sue Rae Irelan, Tahoe Center for a Sustainable Future; and Nancy Davis and Robert Ball, Watershed Project AmeriCorps members.

The field study elements of the project were incorporated in the middle school curriculum, using a drainage ditch adjacent to the school to teach students how to do the monitoring and how to examine the results. Teachers at both schools intend to continue to develop the Trout Creek project, some beginning in Spring on a mapping excercise. This will occur in whatever stream reach offers ability to access.
