Components of a Regional Program for a Sustainable Future

Many regions are creating programs to reach a sustainable future. These regions often confront similar obstacles and issues. We have identified some of the components of emerging programs. The following is not a linear list so much as a web of interrelated elements which together create the capacity and resources to enable collaborative processes to evolve and be effective. Some are essential, core elements and others provide structural support.

  1. A "sense of place," established by identifying: common economic, environmental and quality of life interests; it includes geographical boundaries, which can be: an ecosystem, eatershed or a city community .
  2. Networks of diverse collaborations among residents and other stakeholders bringing together people with common interests to work on defined issues.
  3. Shared vision, often through consensus processes.
  4. Strategic alliances inside and outside the region: Provide access to information and leveraging of resources.
  5. Information technologies: electronic communication tools for public education and participation (e.g. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and user-customized reports).
  6. Capacity building programs:
  7. Coordinating organization(s) for these efforts
  8. Regional indicators of sustainability
  9. Unbiased science and analysis
  10. Local reliance and/or comparative advantage
